With such a razor-thin majority in the House, every swing district in next year’s midterms will be crucial for Republicans if they are to maintain unified government in President Donald Trump’s last two years in office. One of those key purple seats is Washington’s 3rd congressional district.
Previously held by Republican Jaimie Herrera Beutler, the district has been something of a white whale for the GOP the last two election cycles. Democrat incumbent Marie Gluesenkamp Perez narrowly defeated Republican Joe Kent in 2022 and 2024. However, she is going to face a new challenger next year.
Washington State Senate minority leader John Braun (R-Centralia) has thrown his hat into the ring, and the early numbers look promising.
Path to victory for John Braun
A poll conducted by the Washington State GOP has Braun beating Gluesenkamp Perez 47.55% to 41.29%.
The poll also shows the incumbent losing in hypothetical matchups against education reform advocate Heidi St. John (45.84% to 42.78%) and State Rep. Jim Walsh (47.88% to 41.96%).
“She hasn’t really accomplished anything,” Braun told the Jason Rantz Show on Seattle Red 770 AM.
“She puts out a great press release, but in terms actually delivering for the district she’s been more concerned about guiding her path and staying on a winnable path than actually getting work done,” Braun added.
Braun is expecting plenty of support from the national party to take this seat back from Democrats.
“This is a top race nationwide… if I do my part, I expect that they’ll come in and help us really push back and bring the seat back to Republican representation,” said an optimistic Braun.
